I personally host my sites with two different hosting companies. I am happy with both of them, but one of them has C-panel which is easy to navigate, and Fantastico which turns WordPress installations into a one minute or less operation. Because of that I highly recommend Hostgator as the best choice for hosting your websites. One other thing, I have studied all of the ‘reviews’ of lots of the other hosting companies and found lots of customer complaints for many of the companies listed in the Top 10. For many years the idea of unlimited web hosting was unthinkable. Competition between web hosting companies was all about who offered the most web space, who offered the highest amount of bandwidth, who offered the most email accounts, who offered the most domains allowed to be hosted, etc.. The battle was about who offered the most, and who could do it at the cheapest price.
As time went on some of the factors that began to become more important were things like up-time (how well a server was performing so that websites weren’t crashing), and customer service. Also, as technologies continued to increase, more and more services were being offered such as software applications and databases. All of these things made the industry more and more competitive and they still had to try and keep their price lower than their competitors.
Today, the latest trend is to list many of the services as unlimited. Unlimited band width, unlimited storage space, unlimited emails, unlimited domains allowed to be hosted, unlimited data bases, and it goes on and on to see who can provide the most unlimited services. One web host even went as far as to say “unlimited + 50 Gigs” as the amount of storage space they offered – which is really kind of a joke. What they’re really trying to say is, “we are always staying one up on everybody else”.
For those who are looking to create a large web business or web presence that might consist of 50, 100 or more websites. The possibilities of unlimited everything might look very appealing. Although you’re led to believe that everything is unlimited, in fact, things are not unlimited and they’ve covered it in their fine print. There are other rules in place, so that you really can’t do whatever you want.
Most, if not all unlimited sites for instance, do not allow you to host unlimited videos, pictures or any other large files. They know that you end up using so much web space that you are virtually using thousands of dollars worth for a only a couple of dollars a month. And don’t worry … it’s in their fine print – you can’t do it. Mostly they’ve done this to prevent sites like pornography, the mp3 sites that offer free downloads or the video sites that have uploads of all kinds of home videos. They don’t want sites that would cause excessive strain on their servers. Those types of sites are in the fine print…you can’t use them.
Many of them also have clauses, such as, ‘you must not use any more than 25% of the servers resources at any one time’. They also have, ‘you cannot use your full usage allowances all at one time’, in other words if you have lots and lots of files to upload and they determine that it’s way too many all at one time, there is fine print to prevent that as well.
The bottom line is, if you’re using basic types of sites like simple wordpress blogs, simple review sites or content sites with some ads, things like that, then yes, you can create a lot of websites, use quite a bit of bandwidth and things will run smoothly. You will probably have no issues.
However, if one or more of your sites become extremely popular and you begin to strain the band width or usage of the server you’re hosted on, you can be guaranteed that your hosting provider is going to do something about it. Free is not totally free, unlimited is not totally unlimited. You are still going to get only what you pay for and no more (Think about it. If that wasn’t true the host would lose money and go out of business).
It’s all marketing hype and it’s meant to appeal to the uneducated unlearned newbies in the business. These are the people who don’t understand what is really required in web hosting, and what’s really necessary as you grow your personal or business website.
The fact is, that any internet business which is made up of a lot of websites will not be hosted on a shared server. The very first thing the website owner is going to do, is spread those web sites over a number of different hosts, to ensure that all their eggs are not in one basket so to speak. Otherwise, if that host ever crashed, or if they go out of business, the customer would lose their entire portfolio. That would not be a wise thing to do.
The second thing that you need to consider, is that if any of your businesses actually get so large that it would begin to put a strain on the hosting company’s servers, you would not want to be on a shared server. Your business then becomes so important that you want managed servers, dedicated servers or your own servers in order to run your business properly.
The Bad News – although all the unlimited hype sounds really good, it’s not necessarily true.
The Good News – in reality, for those just starting out with a hosting account, whether it’s for business or personal, the unlimited options really don’t matter. The amount of space, bandwidth, and everything else that they offer you, is so much that you’re not going to ever exceed those limits unless you become successful. By then you need to start spreading out into other hosts, and you need to be getting your own managed or dedicated servers anyway.
The hosting companies know that. They know that most people will never exceed their limits. They also know that if the odd person tries to stretch it to the limit, they will just use their fine print to shut that person down or at least force the limits on them.
So it’s good to start by looking at companies that offer unlimited web space, bandwidth, emails, domains, databases etc., but what you really need to look at is the quality of the hosting company. Does it have a good track record with it’s customers when it comes to uptime and service issues.
Also, many people starting out, like to use web templates or blog software such as WordPress. If your website requires php, you will want to know that your hosting package is compatible with it. Does it have an easy to run control panel such as C-panel? It’s also great to have Fantastico, which is an auto-installer for things like wordpress.
I listed my personal recommendation for hosting at the top of the page. It is based on everything that I discussed regarding both features as well as quality. More importantly, it is a host that I actually use.
